The Oneplus 5 gimmick.

Oneplus is a company which came from nowhere in the international phone market with a boom, AKA Oneplus One. The phone was a huge success in the international community and the small minority of critics stood nowhere in front of the massive majority of fans.
This created enough fan-base, mostly being the devs., and a heavenly kick-start for the new player.

Then, with OP2, it gained traction in commons, with OP3 and OP3T it blasted the charts.
Then, the great blunder, the OP5. [the actual blog post begins].

After success of OP2, Carl Pie was once quoted that cost was not their priority, they desired making good phones. At that time this comment was well appreciated. With OP3, the product cost was ramped up a bit. OP3T was even costlier.

But OP5, the phone is a whole damn lot costlier. Till OP3, the Oneplus phone range was in the 20K INR range, with OP5, it has entered the 30K INR range.

The cost doesn't matter if you gets specs, OP5 in this range has neither water resistance nor dust resistant (those IP ratings I'm talking about). A snapdragon 835 is a good CPU but an 8 GB RAM is probably an overkill, which can be comfortably scaled down to 6 GB effectively reducing price. Furthermore, an 8 GB RAM sounds more like a marketing strategy, usually commons who cannot perceive much of the tech., take performance directly proportional to RAM or CPU cores. The company sticked to the old school FHD screen resolution when companies like Samsung are using 2K. Money could be well invested in better display or body protection.

The body of the OP5 is more like copy of Apple iPhone 7 and less like the Oneplus originality. Though the design is ergonomic and well made but Oneplus after the step has lost some of its great dignity in the eyes of many of its fans. Astonishingly, when the renders of the prototypes of the Oneplus 5 were released (don't know if they were official or they were a leak), out of 12-14 designs, only one was the Oneplus original, others were just offshoots of designs of other phones like Nexus 6P, Xiaomi Mi Max, Nokia 6 et cetera. This made me rethink about the design team of Oneplus, the company which committed to spend next to nothing on marketing few years back and is now spending millions on some famous celebrities as their brand ambassadors, whose payments we're paying as small increases in Oneplus phone prices.

The far future of the company often horrors me as I see it deviating from its early commitments. Few months back, I was probably a fanboy of Oneplus, today, the actions of the company has forced me accept that the company is really deviating from its early principles, signs of which were felt in the time period of the OP2 era.

OP5 is really a good phone in terms of a lot of things, I may act like a critic, but the departments in which it disappointed are probably the ones which any tech savvy or a passionate customer sees first.

Thus, I shall be waiting for the next oneplus.
